Fethiye sits at the head of a huge, sheltered gulf scattered with pine-covered islands — the 'Twelve Islands' — on Turkey's Lycian coast. The water is calm, the hops between anchorages are short, and the scenery is the greenest on the whole coast, which makes it the easiest and most family-friendly place to start a blue voyage.

From Fethiye we sail the Twelve Islands and out along the Lycian shore to Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley and Gemiler Island, with its Byzantine ruins. Neighbouring Göcek, a few miles north, shares the same protected waters and links naturally into longer routes.

The Twelve Islands fill Fethiye's gulf — Tersane with its old shipyard cove, Yassıca's shallow turquoise flats, Domuz and Göbün — a cluster of sheltered anchorages you can drift between for days. It is calm, green and rarely rough, ideal for swimming and easy sailing.

Out along the Lycian coast the scenery opens up: the lagoon of Ölüdeniz, the cliffs of Butterfly Valley, and Gemiler (St Nicholas) Island with its ruined churches. Göcek and its own bays lie just to the north, so Fethiye voyages often combine the two — and the Lycian shore runs on toward Kaş and Kekova on longer trips.

Fethiye's gulf is the calmest, greenest and most sheltered on the coast, with very short hops between anchorages and safe, warm swimming everywhere. That makes it the easiest place to try a blue voyage — little open water, no long passages, and always a quiet bay nearby.

The Lycian coast has one of the longest seasons — April to October. June and September are ideal, with warm water and calm gulfs; July and August are hottest and busiest but still sheltered. Spring and October are green, cool and very quiet, good for exploring the shore.
