Athens' yacht base is Alimos Marina, the largest in Greece, on the seafront south of the city with its own park and beach right alongside. For real local flavour, though, it's worth the short taxi into Piraeus or up to Plaka beneath the Acropolis.

Culture & Nature

The Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon, has watched over the city since the 5th century BC — Ottoman rulers later used it as a mosque and, briefly, a harem, before it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Below it, Plaka's tangled lanes have been continuously inhabited for around 3,000 years; the Anafiotika quarter on its upper slope was built by stonemasons brought from the Cycladic island of Anafi in the 1800s, in the low white cubic style of their home island.

Logistics & Technical

Alimos Marina has around 1,100 berths — 50 of them for yachts over 25m — across 428,000m² of water, roughly 8km south of Piraeus and 30km from Athens International Airport. It sits inside Alimos Park, a seafront green belt with organised beaches on either side.

Practical Info

Currency is the Euro. Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main gateway, about 30km/40 minutes from Alimos. Athens traffic can make the marina-to-Acropolis run slow at peak times — the tram from nearby Kalamaki stops is often quicker than a taxi.

⚓ Captain's Note

If you only have one night ashore in Athens, spend it in Piraeus rather than the city centre — the fish tavernas there are as good as anything downtown, and you're back at the boat in ten minutes.
